SUMMARY:CE Course: Practical Passive Solar Design
DESCRIPTION:Practical Passive Solar Design in North Carolina: Green Built Alliance Fall 2023 Workshops \n\n\n\nThis course goes over the main design principles\, with examples\, of passive solar design as it applies to homes in North Carolina climate zones. Passive solar is a set of ancient design principles\, and a long-celebrated aspect of green building; however\, many passive solar design techniques were developed in previous decades when building insulation and airtightness measures were not as advanced\, and in climate zones that were colder or had bigger day/night temperature swings when compared to a NC climate. This class gives an overview of the best practices for passive solar design in new\, energy efficient homes in North Carolina climates in particular. \n\n\n\nParticipants will understand how design choices about the orientation\, shading\, lay out\, window sizes and locations\, use of thermal mass\, and use of high performance building envelope principles in a new home construction project can contribute to energy savings\, homeowner satisfaction\, and even earn rebates and incentives in North Carolina. The purpose is to educate and inspire builders to understand and consider the use of some or all of these design principles in order to build homes that require less heating and cooling energy and are more comfortable. \n\n\n\nParticipants will leave the class with an understanding of the following: \n\n\n\n\nHow a home’s orientation\, shading\, lay out\, window areas and orientation of windows\, use of thermal mass\, and use of insulation and air-tightness technique during construction can contribute to energy savings and comfort in new homes\, passively.\n\n\n\nHow these principles play out in two different levels of passive design: sun tempered design and full passive solar.\n\n\n\nHow to design overhangs or awnings that shade south facing windows in summer but leave them open to solar heat gain in winter.\n\n\n\nSpecific guidelines for window glass area by orientation as a percentage of floor area that create the most effective passive reduction of heating costs in a North Carolina climate without unintentionally raising cooling costs.\n\n\n\nSpecific guidelines for how much and what type of thermal mass should be used to offset higher amounts of south facing glass in full passive solar designs. See examples of how other homes have incorporated thermal mass.\n\n\n\nCommon misperceptions about passive solar homes.\n\n\n\nHow passive solar design strategies fit into the current landscape of North Carolina’s energy code\, available green building programs\, and rebate programs for energy efficiency.\n\n\n\n\nThis course has been approved as a two-hour elective course eligible for continuing-education credit through the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors. The hours additionally apply toward Green Built Alliance’s Regenerative Professional Accreditation. The class may also meet continuing-education criteria for other organizations; please email danny@greenbuilt.org with questions related to qualifying for continuing education. \n\n\n\nInstructor bio:  \n\n\n\nLeigha Dickens is a building scientist and RESNET HERS Rater. For more than a decade\, she has been managing the green building and sustainability department at Deltec Homes\, a member of Green Built Alliance that manufactures and builds high-performance homes. Leigha was previously the Green Building Program Manager at Green Built Alliance and now serves on the Board of Directors. Leigha applies her background in physics and environmental science to building science\, green building design\, and renewable energy. She has experience in residential construction management with a focus on achieving high performance in residential energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.

SUMMARY:CE Course: Edible and Native Plants of WNC
DESCRIPTION:Edible and Native Plants of Western North Carolina: Green Built Alliance Fall 2023 Workshops \n\n\n\nThis course introduces the concept of edible and native plants for landscaping. Participants will be introduced to more than 40 edible and attractive landscaping plants\, many of which are native. All of these plants either feed people\, feed wildlife\, build soil\, and/or feed other plants while remaining an attractive addition to the landscape. They will learn how to work with clients and specific sites to meet the needs of the residents and the plants. \n\n\n\nParticipants will leave the class with a better understanding of what plants are available for edible and native landscaping. They should feel confident in incorporating at least a few edible and/or native plants into a landscape on future projects and how to communicate the benefits of these plants to their clients. \n\n\n\nThis course has been approved as a two-hour elective course eligible for continuing-education credit through the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors. The hours additionally apply toward Green Built Alliance’s Regenerative Professional Accreditation. The class may also meet continuing-education criteria for other organizations; please email danny@greenbuilt.org with questions related to qualifying for continuing education. \n\n\n\nInstructor bio:  \n\n\n\nLaura Ruby is a Certified Permaculture Teacher\, founder of YummyYards\, cofacilitator of the Wild Abundance Permaculture Design Course\, and co-owner of a 56-acre permaculture education center and event space\, The Ruby Roost. \n\n\n\nLaura started YummyYards to help families grow food where they live and support people who want to create or expand their aesthetic and edible gardens. Laura believes these two types of gardens do not need to be separate. Instead\, they can ebb and flow to create a more resilient\, productive and beautiful outdoor living space. \n\n\n\nLaura was born with a strong\, inborn love of plants and animals. But it wasn’t until she earned her Permaculture Design Certificate in 2002 from Crystal Waters EcoVillage in Australia that she understood how to work with them sustainably\, through whole systems design. After this experience\, and graduating from the University of Colorado with a degree in environmental science\, she started working with the Growe Foundation\, designing and implementing gardens at 14 elementary schools. While working here\, she went back to school to earn a Master of Business Administration from Green Mountain College. \n\n\n\nWhen Laura moved to Western North Carolina in 2013\, she immediately started working with other landscapers and nurseries in the Asheville area. Through volunteering with The Fruit and Nut Club\, she took a position with The Roots Foundation. She is currently their Director of Curriculum. Presently\, she is working with teachers in Asheville City Schools and developing multi-disciplinary\, real world\, project-based learning lessons for grades K-7 at the Roots Foundation. She also co-designed many of the outdoor learning classrooms at Vance Elementary School of Ecology. \n\n\n\nSome of her most fun teaching and designing highlights include: co-teaching and co-facilitating the first for-credit Permaculture Design Course at the University of Colorado; teaching the first Permaculture Design course for 11- to 17-year-olds through Colorado University’s Science Discovery Program; running the urban farming segment for the Escoffier School of Culinary Arts in Boulder\, CO; co-facilitating a permaculture design course at the GrowHaus in Denver\, CO; and designing and teaching a permaculture course for Jamaican residents at the Source Farm in Johns Town\, Jamaica.
